The Xcaret area has an interesting past. It is believed to be what was formerly known as the ancient port of Polé. The Maya would come to this area to purify themselves before visiting Cozumel to worship Ixchel- the goddess of fertility. Even today, you can find ancient remains of the Maya civilisation here.

The Xcaret Eco Theme Park covers an area of 200 acres of this historic place. When architect Miguel Quintana Pali (who owned 5 hectares) cleared out the area in the 1980’s, he found a series of underground rivers that formed sinkholes and caves before it joined the sea. He understood this was a rare place and could become an unique tourist spot and soon he planned an Eco park in the area.

In a way, the park is not your conventional idea of a theme park since it uses the natural heritage and environment including the ancient ruins with the thick jungle cover, the underground river and cave system and the rich native flora and fauna to offer visitors an oasis away from the concrete jungle.  The park includes a Jaguar island, a Coral reef aquarium, an Orchid greenhouse home to around 80 different species of orchid, a breeding farm, a number of caverns and a butterfly farm where you can see some of the most beautiful butterflies on the planet!

The jungle trails are stunning with pathways that meander around thick forest cover. However, if you are feeling a little too adventurous, you can swim with nurse sharks and sting rays at the park or simply go snorkelling to see gorgeous tropical fishes. The entire area works to preserve the turtle population. If you time your visit, you can see the hatchings and learn about different turtles that are preserved at the park. When here, don’t miss the cultural attractions at the park that include a replica of the Mayan Village, the Mesoamerican ball game and the open theatre where you can see pre Hispanic dances.
