Under the soothing shade of magnificent Banyan trees stands Sri Lanka’s premier cultural institution- the Colombo national museum. To greet you on your ingress is a Buddha carved in stone which dates back to the 9th century and the enigmatic smile of the statue will surely mesmerize you.

The galleries displaying a huge collection of arts, carvings and statuary, a peek through the ancient past of the country is easily possible. Developed and maintained for about 150 years now, this gallery has rare findings not only from the antique era but also swords, guns and other paraphernalia from the colonial period.

There are fascinating 19th-century reproductions of English paintings of Sri Lanka, and an excellent collection of antique demon masks. The magnificent royal throne made for King Wimaladharma in 1693 as well as the 9th-century bronze Bodhisattva Sandal are a must-watch.

• The museum has concession for locals, students, teachers and children.
• Entrance tickets are not issued after 5.00 pm.

• The prices for carrying the camera is LKR 250 and video camera is LKR 2000.

• The museum is closed on public holidays.

• You can take the cool kangaroo radio cab, the ace cab or rent a taxi service. The cheapest and easiest way is to hire the tuk-tuk.
