It’s weird, isn’t it? This curiosity that we have about anything that is forbidden? But the world is full of places that are as secretive as the plot of the next James Bond sequel and as out of reach as a flight to the moon. Countries have built military bases and exclusive museums that can reveal a great deal about their security nuances. Believe it ir not, even nature intended to keep some places out of bounds for human civilization.

1. North Sentinel Island

Well, technically you can visit this place. It’s just that you won’t return alive. The tribe on the North Sentinel Island in Andaman, India is so protective about their environment and ancient culture that they kill anybody who even so much as drifts near the island. They are, for this reason, the most dangerous and protected tribe in the world.

2. Vatican Secret Archives

Sure, Dan Brown has piqued your interest about the Vatican and its secrets. But this one is strictly confidential. Documents dating back to eight century and loads of official correspondence are stored deep underground, out of the peering eyes of the curious world. Some of the items here include letters from Michelangelo, a letter from Mary Queen of Scots written while she was awaiting her execution, and King Henry VIII’s request for a marriage annulment.

3. Snake Island

Proclaimed by many as the most dangerous island on earth, this place is so venomous that you’d not want visit it even if you were given a chance. Located some 20 miles off the shore of the busy Sao Paolo in Brazil, this island is home to the most deadliest snake in the world, the Golden Lancehead Viper. Its venom can eat through your flesh. And there’s about 4000 of these on this island!

4. Area 51

Great urban legends and movies have been made on this US secret facility. And though the documentaries may claim to know what is going on inside, absolutely nobody is allowed to enter this facility in Southern Nevada where the US claims to be experimenting with new aircraft and weaponry. Of course, the popular opinion is that aliens and UFOs are tested here.

5. Mezhgorye

The whole town of Mezhgorye seems to be involved in some top secret work. It is located in Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia. Many theories say that these people are working on a nuclear program or a war bunker in case of war or that it could even be a safeguard of Russian treasures. Don’t put your money on anything, just yet.

6. Woomera

Woomera Proteced Area is an Australian military testing range that is spread over 124,000 square kilometers. It is said to have a high concentration of gold, iron ore and opals in its soil. But there is also such a huge amount of unlaunched war material lying there that this place is practically a minefield.

7. Jiangsu National Security Education Museum

If you were allowed here, you’d be walking into a real spy movie at this museum that is exclusively for Chinese nationals. You’d find lipsticks with guns, maps hidden in a deck of cards and many such cool gadgets that were used by spies over all these years. Of course, the Chinese government knows better than to trust you with their sensitive information.

8. Fort Knox

What does a government do when it cannot handle the huge reserve of gold it has? Build a facility for it of course. This place in Kentucky is said to hold about 5% of all the gold ever refined in history. Visuals of endless seas of gold coins come to mind, don’t they? We’ll never know.

9. Tomb of Qin Shi Huang

This is truly a fascinating place. The tomb of Qin Shi Huang is said to be buried deep under a hill in Central China along with anything he would ever need in his life, including an army of terracotta soldiers. Many of these soldiers and statues have been excavated but it is believed that a lot many are still underground and will never be pulled out.

10. Lascaux Caves

Located in North Western France, these caves are a complex system of Paleolithic paintings that date back to 17,000 years. Although visitors were allowed here initially, since 2008, the French government has prohibited any visitors in this mystical place. It is one of the only UNESCO World Heritage sites that are out of reach for visitors.

Even though communication and transport technology has got the world closer and made it more accessible, there still remain places that defy this idea and continue to exist as hidden in plain sight. Food for thought, isn’t it?
