Plane accidents that shocked the world in 2015

As the New Year shines its light on us, we reminisce and remember all those we have lost to the series of Plane accidents and mishaps that shocked the world. The Mishaps may be because of technical failure or accidents but shocked the world indeed.

1. January 18, 2015 Syrian Air Force an-26 Crash

January 18, 2015 marks the date when a Syrian Air force had crashed while it was attempting to land at the besieged Abu al-Duhur military airport. The passengers included 35 people, out of which 30 were Syrian soldiers and 5 Iranian military experts. The crash which was because of the heavy fog claimed all 35 lives before it came shooting down. Al-Nusra Front a terrorist organization linked with Al-Qaeda that claims that they shot down the plane.

2. February 4, 2015 TransAsia Airways Flight 235

On Feburary 4, 2015 TransAsia Airways Flight 235 which is a domestic flight crashed into the Keelung River.  The flight took off from Taipei Songshan Airport and after 2 minutes of flight the pilots reported an engine flameout, in the process of crash landing the plane the second working engine was shut down by mistake and the plane crashed into the river. Only 15 people out of the 53 passengers and 5 crew members survived.

3. Germanwings Flight 9525

Germanwings Flight 9525, an international flight that was travelling from BarcelonaEl Prat Airport in Spain to Düsseldorf Airport in Germany crashed in north-west of Nice in French Alps. The crash was deliberately caused by the co-pilot Andreas Lubitz, who was diagnosed of suicidal tendencies but hid that information from his employer. The crash took all 150 lives which included 144 passengers and 6 cabin crew members.

4. 2015 Indonesian Air Force Lockheed C-130 Hercules crash

Lockheed KC-130B Hercules, a plane belonging to the Indonesian Air Force crashed near a residential neighbor-hood. The plane was carrying 12 crew members and 109 passengers, the plane was transporting military personnel and their families, however there were some civilians present as well. The presence of civilians on a plane as such is a violation of the law but is often accepted. The plane crashed through a tower and burst into flames before coming down.

5. August 16, 2015 Trigana Air Service Flight 257

On 16th August, 2015 a domestic flight Trigana Air Service 257 was flying from Sentani to Oksibil in the district of Papua. After flying for 30 minutes the plane crashed and took the lives of 49 passengers and 5 crew members.  The remains of the plane were found in the Bitang region of Oksibil. The crash claimed the life of 44 adults, 3 children and 2 infants which is excluding the crew members.

6. 31 October 2015 an Airbus A321 Kogalymavia Flight 9268

The Russian airline Metrojet met with a serious setback when flight 7K9268, ICAO: KGL9268 a chartered passenger flight crashed due to a terrorist attack. Russian Federal Security Service confirmed that there was a bomb on the plane as they found explosive residue that was left behind. The plane was carrying 217 passengers and seven crew members who all lost that life in the crash.

7. 22 Dec 2015, BSF plane

 

A 11-seater plane that was carrying BSF officers crashed in Dwarka in Delhi at 9.40 am on a Tuesday. The crash that was caused due to a technical issue in the plane killed everyone on board. After taking off the plane hit a tree and crashed. The plane was carrying technicians from Palam airport to Ranchi to repair a Mi-17 V5 helicopter.

The year of 2015 has seen a lot of deaths related to the airplane industry. Be it a commercial plane or an army operation the sky has not been our friend. This however raised a lot of questions like, could the people on board have been saved? Is travelling by plane safe?
