1. Dow Hills, Kurseong, West Bengal

Located just 30km off Darjeeling and one of the oldest municipalities under West Bengal, the entire hilltown of Kurseong is said to be haunted, but Dow Hills and the entire forest area surrounding it is by far the spookiest. Countless murders and suicides have taken place here, by those terrorised by eerie sightings such as that of a headless man following travellers and a woman in white, and many of those who survived have reported that they couldn't shake off the feeling they're being watched in this sinister forest.
2. Pripyat, Chernobyl, Ukraine

29 years after the disastrous nuclear accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant that destroyed countless lives, the city of Pripyat remains a dilapidated ghost town. Once having housed the employees of the plant, along with their families, it has been completely abandoned for fear of radioactive contamination and not a soul is to be found here.
3. Craco, Italy

Sometimes, it is as though the earth itself rejects inhabitants from the land and so it is with the tale of the city of Craco in Italy. Located at the foot of the city, the population had around 2, 000 inhabitants by the 19th century, but the population only kept dwindling from there on; poor farming conditions and earthquakes over the years further worsened the situation and in 1963, the remaining 1,800 relocated and thus the town turned into the crumbling ruins it is today.

4. Grand-Bassam, Ivory Coast

In the 19th century, Grand-Bassam used to be the French colonial capital but a heavy bout of yellow fever caused thousands of death, that led to the abandonment of the town. It has only been inhabited by squatters following the outbreak, and all other signs of life and business have long moved away.
5. Plymouth, West Indies

1995 witnessed the eruption of Soufri¨re Hills volcano for the first time in hundreds of years and this British territory in the Caribbean was completely buried under ash and mud as a consequence. Half the inhabitants fled at that point and the rest followed suit in the further eruptions during the 1990s leaving behind a post-apocalyptic world, that endures till date.
