Come weekend and all Mumbaikars who are struck with wanderlust start searching for cool weekend getaways from Mumbai. Although there are plenty of destinations to visit near the city, we know that the adventure and thrill seekers prefer to head over to the mountains and hike up to pinnacles that show them marvellous sights. 1. Raigad Fort Trek:

One of the best trekking places in Maharashtra, Raigad Fort needs no introduction! Located in the Raigad district, this fort used to be the capital of the Maratha Empire. Although a ropeway is available to transport visitors from the bottom to the top, hardcore trekkers prefer to climb up approximately 1700 steps to reach one of the most famous forts in Maharashtra.

2. Mahuli Fort Trek:

Located in the Thane district, the Mahuli Fort is one of the popular winter treks one can undertake near Mumbai. Located near the more popular Prabalgad, Kalavantin Durg is one intimidating looking fort! If you want to go mountain trekking in Mumbai, it does not get better than this! On a clear day, one gets stunning views of the city of Mumbai from the top of Kalavantin Durg.

4. Lohagad Trek:

Easy to climb and offering beautiful views of the village of Malavali as well as Lonavala, the Archaeology Survey of India has declared the fort a protected monument.

5. Prabalgad Trek:

Also known as Muranjan, Prabalgad is located between Panvel and Matheran. Built on a plateau, the fort offers magnificent views of the nearby Kalavantin Durg as well as of Matheran. It is one of the easiest trekking places near Mumbai.

6. Sudhagad Trek:

Having 2 access routes- from Thakurwadi and from Dhondse, Sudhagad is a protected sanctuary. It is believed that this fort dates back to the 2nd century BC thus making it one of the oldest forts in the state. The fort’s presiding deity, Bhoraidevi, has a temple dedicated to her in the fort’s premises.

7. Siddhagad-Bhimashanker Trek:

A range trek, this one is a 2 day affair and covers the fort of Siddhagad and the Shiva temple of Bhimashankar. The route one can follow is Borwadi-Siddhagad-Kondwal village- rest overnight- proceed towards Bhimashanker. Definitely a must do for trekking enthusiasts.

8. Harishchandragad Fort:

A famous night trekking destination near Mumbai, Harishchandragad Fort is the stuff of legends. 9. Rajmachi Night Trek:

Although Rajmachi is one of the one day treks near Mumbai, if you decide to undertake an adventurous night trek, it takes two days to complete this magnificent trek. You will be starting the trek from Lonavala at night and by early morning you will be reaching the village at the base of Rajmachi. 1. A light jacket if you intend on trekking overnight and during the monsoons/ winters.
