Humans have an ability to turn every tiny thing of joy into a festivity. While some festivals have a deep symbolic meaning (that many fail to understand), some are totally run-of-the-mill and ridiculous. These strange festivals around the world prove that there are crazy people everywhere. Burning Man, the annual Festival of Nevada’s Black Rock City, is what you can call the epitome of creative expression. This brilliantly bizarre festival started as a small bonfire in San Francisco in 1986 and soon shifted to Nevada to be more famous, or rather infamous than ever before. Burning Man is one of the most amazing festivals in the world and includes a symbolic burning of a large wooden effigy or the “Man”. More than a festival, Burning Man is a social experiment.

2. Golden Retriever Festival - Cuteness Overloaded

3. International Highline Meeting Festival- Partying on the Clouds

One of the coolest and at the same time, most thrilling festivals ever, International Highline Meeting Festival is made for the real daredevils. Hundreds of feet above the ground, a tightrope is stretched across the Italian Alps where many hammocks are placed. What can be more exciting than partying high in the sky? 

4. Thaipusam- Not for the Faint-Hearted

Now, this is something only for the strong-hearted people! Although Thaipusam is celebrated in all the countries where Tamil community lives, such as Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius, and South Africa, Thaipusam has a grand cultural celebration in the Tamil Nadu state of India. Throngs of devotees (men, women, and even kids) pierce their arms, cheeks, backs, and tongues with spears and perform death-defying deeds. Scary, isn’t it?

5. Boryeong Mud Festival- Get a Glowing Skin

Boryeong Mud Festival is what you can call the La Tomatina of South Korea. Attracting millions of visitors every year, this mud festival includes mud swimming, mud wrestling, and mud sliding. 6. Chios Rocket War (Rouketopolemos)- The Most Spectacular War

Heard of a rivalry between two churches that leads to a rocket war? Well, I’m not kidding. Rouketopolemos or the Rocket War is the annual celebration that happens on the Greek Island of Chios. The two town churches of Chios- St. Mark's and Panaghia Ereithiani fire thousands of rockets hitting the bell towers of each.
