Where to Stay in Helsinki, Finland?

PLACES TO STAY

Generally youth hostel style dormitory accommodation is the only real option for budget travellers inside the city.

Budget

  • Cheap Sleep: Sturenkatu 27 Cheap dorms and pricey doubles (for a hostel) great for transport stops, and nights on the town.
  • Hostel Erottajanpuisto: Uudenmaankatu 9 Nice but small hostel with good staff and a decent central location and very reasonable pricing.

Mid range

  • Best Western Premier Hotel: Katajanokka It looks like a prison from the outside because it used to be one, it's much nicer inside though. Contact on + 358 9 686 450
  • Eurohostel: Linnankatu 9 Large friendly hostel, near the ferry terminal and the cathedral, good prices for rooms.

Luxuruy

  • Cumulus Kaisaniemi: Kasainiemumenkatu 7 Functional if a little basic business hotel in the centre of town, no frills. Contact on + 358 9 5466 0100
  • StayAt Parliament: Museokkatu 18 Beautiful place in the Toolo district, modern and comfy – with great views. Contact on +358 9 2511 050

PLACES TO EAT

  • Bar Number 9: Uudenmaankatu 9 Popular place that tends to pack out at lunch times, great variety of food.
  • Chilli: Keskusatu 6 Perfect local variation on a Middle Eastern theme, kebabs, shwarma and falafel abound.
  • Khavila Suomi: Purseimiehenktau Live like a local it's no nonsense Finnish place popular with Dock workers and the Japanese (thanks to a movie set there).
  • Kuu: Toolonkatu 27 Lots of Finnish speciality food and a great (and reasonably priced) wine list.
  • Kappeli: Etelaesplanadi 1 If you want to munch on reindeer and then follow it with a great local blueberry pie, now's your chance. Can be a little pricey for what it is though.
  • Boathouse: Liukasaari Island Only open in the summer one of the best fish restaurants in the archipelago but it is expensive.
