New York Comedy Club, Reviews
Not my favorite night. I paid $25 + $3 service fee(online purchase) to get in and I found out that a lot of other people had either gotten in for free or discounted tickets. Mind you this was a Wednesday night so only half the theatre was full so they obviously wanted to fill seats so I can see their reasoning. I would of been happy with the price if the show had stopped at 8 comedians, but someone had the great idea of doing 17 comedians. Ten comedians in over half the audience had left. Twelve comedians in 3/4 of the audience had left. They had obviously scheduled the greener or less funny comedians at the end. They did have one or two funny comedians at the end, but mostly duds. The last 2-3 comics were very appreciative of us staying which was nice. I would be bothered less, except it seemed like two of the comics near the end were berating us of not being a very good audience. First of all, their jokes were just falling flat, and second we'd already seen so many comedians that we were a little laughed out. Third we were only an audience of 6. It could of been a good experience if I didn't feel like I was being held hostage by my politeness and they ended at 8 comics. The other side of the coin which was a little frustrating was the drink situation. Waitress was great. Seemed very on top of it. They have a "2 drink minimum" which really means a $17 minimum which really means a $23 minimum. That's only if you choose the $17 unlimited soda option or the Budweiser option. The minimum you can get away purchasing alcohol is 2 Budweiser(cheapest option) $8.50/ piece $2 tax $4 mandatory tip. $23 total. I don't mind paying that much, but at least tell me it's going to be that much instead of jerking me around with price. Lastly of all, it almost feels like it's industry practice to be able to walk out on comedians especially when they have so many in a row(with no break). I don't like that idea, but I wouldn't hesitate to do it in the future, I'll just try to be discreet about it.
The one star I gave was for the comedians being absolutely hilarious!!! I went to see Hot Soup. However, like others have said, the bouncer sucks and literally disrupts the entire show to tell people to be quiet... at a comedy club!!! Definitely not going back due to how ridiculous it was. The comics were trying to get more reactions from the audience but every time someone got involved the bouncer ran over and ruined it. Horrible venue, great comics.
The comedians were pretty funny but the bouncer was way too strict. I understand that there cannot be private conversations but we saw a group of guys next to us get kicked out for one quick, quiet comment to each other. It's It honestly felt more like a classroom with a teacher looking for reasons to kick people out of his room than a fun night at a comedy club. Go somewhere else and have a more relaxed experience.
This was my first visit to this comedy club. Like most, they have a 2 item per person minimum. They offer a non alcoholic option as well. Super friendly host and bartender, made us feel very welcome. They have a really cool concept... you only pay the cover once, then you can come back any time (just call ahead to make sure open seats are available). They give you a return ticket to present. Definitely worth the visit. The host remembered our names on the way out. Top notch service.
My best friend and I went on a Sunday night on our last night in NYC..it was the best experience ever!!! We laughed until we had tears coming down our face! All the comics were hilarious! We never stopped laughing the time we sat down! We got there about 30mins early and we had front row seatings!! Nice little hole in the wall comedy club! It’s a must place to visit when in NYC!! Best comedy stand in NYC!! Few helpful tips: 1. You must show up at least 30 minutes before your show, but there's not much space to wait. 2. The drinks. Drinks at the bar before the show *don't count* towards the two-drink minimum! And check your bill carefully because tip may be included, even though there is a blank line for Tip.
