1. Aachen Cathedral

Aachen Cathedral is one of the most important places of tourist interests in Aachen, Germany. This Roman Catholic Church is one of the oldest in Europe. Also called the Kaiserdom (or the Imperial Cathedral of Aachen), this church was built by Charlemagne in 805 AD. The emperor was later buried at the same site. Containing many wealth of treasures of the early mediaeval Europe, this church holds a few artefacts like the Charlemagne's Throne, a golden altarpiece, a golden pulpit, the golden shrine of Charlemagne, and the shrine of the Virgin Mary. The inside of the church is very impressive with many colourful tile patterns that rise from floor to ceiling.

2. Aachen Marktplatz

One of the most happening places to be in Aachen, the Aachen Marktplatz, or the marketplace is the main commercial area. Dotted with buildings on all sides, this triangular shaped market is definitely worth visiting. With paved streets and little shops, this place looks absolutely lively and magical. The town hall of Karlsbrunnen is located in the centre of the marketplace along with 17th century bronze statue of Charles. 3. Elisenbrunnen

Also called the Elisa Fountain, the Elisenbrunnen is an iconic neoclassical pavilion located in Aachen. Built by architects Johann Peter Cremer and Karl Friedrich Schinkel, this monument is named after Prussian Crown Princess Elisabeth Ludovika of Bavaria (Elise), the daughter of the Bavarian King Maximilian I, and wife of the later Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Featuring two sulphurous drinking fountains, this is one of the best thermal springs found in Aachen. 4. Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum

One of the best art museums in Aachen, the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum was created in 1877. Founded by Barthold Suermondt, this museum was earlier named the Suermondt Museum, after the founder had donated 105 paintings from his personal collection. Later in 1977, the museum was renamed as Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in honour of art collectors Irene and Peter Ludwig after they donated a significant part of their collection to the museum. The museum houses the works of Tilman Riemenschneider, Hendrik Douvermann, Arndt van Tricht, Joos van Cleve, Luca Cranach the Elder, and Aelbrecht Bouts among many others. 

5. Aachen Cathedral Treasury

The Aachen Cathedral Treasury, or Aachener Domschatzkammer, is a museum in Aachen. This museum houses some of the most important artworks of medieval churches in Europe. The Aachen Cathedral Treasury is the first ever German monuments to enter the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Containing the works from late Antique, Carolingian, Ottonian, Staufen, and Gothic era, the many artworks here are divided into five thematic groups. 6. Rathaus Aachen (City Hall Aachen)

7. Centre Charlemagne

8. Couven Museum

A unique and a one-of-a-kind museum, the Couven Museum features middle-class furnishings & décor from the 18th and the 19th century. A great place to chance upon viewing a typical German house from the bygone era, this museum is set in a restored house from the 1600s. 9. Ponttor

One of the best-preserved monuments in Aachen, the Ponttor is one of the two remaining gates of the original city wall of Aachen. Built in the 14th century, this gate was manned during the Free Imperial City of Aachen era and has been one of the most important structures in city’s history. 11. Burg Stolberg

Located 17 kilometres east of Aachen, Burg Stolberg is located in the town of Stolberg in Rheinland. Built by the Lords of Stalburg, this castle rises on a steep limestone cliff in the centre of the old town. The castle building is divided by four terraced levels and looks absolutely magnificent as it rises in the middle of the town. Today very well restored, this castle has many towers and gateways that date back to the 12th century. The castle also has a small museum that focuses on the history of metal mining and working that happened here for centuries.
