Aros Aarhus Kunstmuesum - Review

Someone put a lot of thought into building this museum and it paid off big time. The construct is massive – ten stories tall, 17000 square metres – one of the largest art museums in Europe. Approaching it you’ll see the 150 metre long Rainbow Panorama – the circular skywalk that rests like a crown on the building.

There are three permanent collections: The Danish "Golden Age" , Danish Modernism and Contemporary Art. But that’s not the true curiosity of this museum. That honor goes to the 9 Spaces – an installation art gallery that represents the nine circles of hell from Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy – meaning as you rise up the museum – you’re ascending from hell to haloed heaven.

The $10.7 million skywalk itself is rainbow coloured, so as you look out from it, different sections of Aarhus are colored differently.

As of 103, the museum receives half a million visitors annually.

Aros Aarhus Kunstmuesum, Aarhus Reviews

  • Quite wonderful and interesting! The 5 meter tall baby is a must-watch and also, the section where the software tells you how you looked at a painting was fun one. I was surprised to have spent more than four hours, despite not being a museum person myself. The visit was definitely worth it!

  • Very large art museum that I recommend anyone visiting Aarhus go to see. There are at least five floors worth of exhibits, with the rainbow panorama (which has an amazing view of the city) topping it off. There is also a nice outside area just below the rainbow panorama with lounges.

  • ARoS is an excellent museum with contemporary modern art exhibitions to complement its Danish art collection. I enjoyed the "man is no island" exhibit. Perhaps the most remarkable work of art was Ron Mueck's sculpture of "Boy" -an oversized but otherwise realistic 4.5-meter tall sculpture of a boy squatting. His facial expressions, depending on your view point, could be interpreted as fear and anger to a playful and haughty smile when standing underneath him. "No man is an island" exhibit also displays a Lamborghini Gallardo that has been scratched. The display of the scratched car could either make you cringe or appreciate it as art... nevertheless, the message, according to our guide was that 'Everything we, as a society, do leaves a mark on the society we live in and no one is left unscathed" so let's think about our actions and the impact it has on our community. According to the curator the car will not be repainted. it could be resold or driven as is. One needs a minimum of 3.5 hours to really appreciate the museum exhibits. But you cannot leave without a visit to the famous colorful panorama ring on the roof. This colorful walkway provides a 360° panoramic view of the city and is really spectacular at sunset. So check out the museum on Wednesdays as it stays open till at 10pm.

  • I brought a friend who was visiting from England, and neither of us have been before. She has visited many of the best art museums in the world, and she said that ARoS is one of the best she has visited. The staff are so helpful. The café is very nice and not too expensive. While I drank my coffee, I even got to enjoy a rehearsal for a jazz concert taking place later. Wonderful. The museum collection is excellent. I look forward to visiting again.

  • Love this museum! It’s an art piece in itself and surely a must while you’re in Aarhus so you can get a rainbow panorama view of the city! Always has wonderful exhibitions as well. Highly recommend!
