A natural amphitheater located about 17 miles west of Abiquiu, Echo Amphitheater offers unusual auditory properties with visitors coming to throw their voices off the cliff wall and listen to these voice bounce and fade. Legend has it that years ago a group of Navajo executed a family of settlers at the top of the cliff and in retaliation, years later, a number of Navajo were murdered at the same spot. People associate the natural echoing at the place with the voices of the dead. The colorful sandstones, people believe are actually blood stains of those executed. Though there seems to be a little truth to the tales, the site is worth a visit for the mysterious story and auditory characteristics.
