Louvre Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Reviews
Very informative and they have a special exhibit center which has excellent topics covered in great detail. This changes every three months. We took the guided tour but the guide was very quick and took us through the main exhibits very quickly. Thus not doing justice to the place. To wholly enjoy it, you have to spend a few hours on your own. Rather take the multimedia tour.
Nice to find an outpost from one of the world's top museums out in the desert. Getting here from the airport is easy. Just ask at the desk in the arrivals area and they'll get you a bus pass and the schedule for A19. Everything in AD is very spread out so plan on an hour on the bus each direction. Museum is very modern and nicely done with a series of exhibits from around the world that detail art through the ages. The number of pieces is relatively small but they have been thoughtfully chosen and represent a good diversity. I was able to make it through the entire museum in about an hour which was good because of my time table to get back but also left me feeling like I had overpaid for the experience. Specifically the exhibit on globes was very limited (one small room) though it was billed as the big thing to come see. For this I took off one star
This Louvre opened quite recently (end of 2017), and isn't nearly as large as the original Louvre in Paris. Don't go there with the expectations of seeing something similar. Only if you set those hopes aside, you can start to appreciate the beautiful building. The exposition itself will take you somewhere between one hour and two hours, depending on your sustained interest in art. The exposition focuses on the damn of men and starts thousands of years before Christ to end with modern art. Each room sets in a new age. As already said, the main focus should be on the building itself. It is truly beautiful and I would recommend starting the exposition roughly an hour before sunset so that you can enjoy the view on the ocean when the sun sets.
I love the fact that there is such a cultural place in Abu Dhabi that clearly wants to be iconic. Whilst it may not have the longevity of other world renowned museum, this place shows that what a country will it can achieve. It is new and well organised. I hope they change their exhibits over time to incorporate more Arabic influences. That was the only reason I gave it 4 stars. They should source more from surrounding emirates, Bahrain and Asia, that has had a deep influence on how this region has developed over the centuries. If I want to see King Louis and any other middle class aristocrats in portrait, I can go to the European museums/galleries to see. This place should be a celebration of all things of Arabic influence not a duplicate of the French and English. PS the atrium is a stunning design of Arabic design made into art. The place was so cool as a result.
I'm no museum expert and the louvre seemed to know. Well thought out, makes it interesting for a new generation. Modern architecture is more my thing and this place has it in spades. Saw pics of the main atrium before I went but they don't do it justice. Amazing!
