Spread over an area of 1050 acres, this manmade island is home to a vast natural expanse that is highly journeyed by nature lovers and explorers. Full of possibilities, the place is a coast off the main Abu Dhabi Island spanning from the Abu Dhabi Breakwater to the Zayed Sea Port. The place was established in 1992 and had been a great hope for the city. Today, though it is officially closed to public it is still visited by folks through private boats. The private boats can be used from the harbors to reach the island. For commutation buses are available there. Ensure to take a dig into the heritage village if you are visiting the place.

  • I always was fascinated by LuLu Island and wondered how to get there. Found out last week! Its quite simple really. You can hire a boat from the Mina wharf near the Mina Fish Market. As you approach the wharf where all the small boats are, the boatmen will themselves pester you for boat rides. We actually took a 1 hr boat ride and asked the boatman to take us to LuLu Island which he did. He told us that if we want to have a picnic there, he would drop us and then come later whenever we wanted, to pick us up. He quoted AED250-300 for the boat for a drop and pick up service but you can bargain as all prices are very very negotiable. The boatman also said that you need to take all your food, drink, mats, umbrella, barbecue grill etc, towels, music because nothing is available on the island. We first stopped at the jetty on the Abu Dhabi city facing side of the island . There is a security guard there to look after the abandoned properties on the island. He is happy to chat with anyone coming because as he said, he's bored out of his mind doing nothing there all day. A fat cat gave him company :-) This side of the island had a long stretch of the beach which you can see from the Corniche. The beach looked rather dirty. Obviously picnickers dont bother to take their rubbish back with them, which they really should. The boatman then took us to the sea front side of LuLu island. We had to pass a Coastguard check near the Breakwater. They can ask for your Emirates ID but they didnt bother with us, anyway if you want to go to the rear side of the island you do need to carry an ID with you. The beach on the rear side looked a lot cleaner and obviously you have more privacy there, but the view from the Corniche facing side is much better. This is because there is a very long and high breakwater between the island and the open sea which is an ugly eyesore on the horizon. There is a full mobile signal on the island, and there is a freshwater shower at the rear side. I did not notice any toilets though there are plenty of shrubs if you need to hide somewhere! I guess you can have a fun picnic on Lulu Island if you go in a large group and if you are a few people you can share the cost of the boat, but otherwise the island looks better from the mainland than what it actually is. The public beach on the Corniche is much bigger and broader.

  • does the island have toilet facilities? is it good for kids? nights will very cold or bearable with warm clothes.. thank you.

    Answer Report Abuse
    • Yes, Lulu Island has washroom facilities. But the island is not yet open to the public and you can take in the beauty of the island on a boat ride. If your kids enjoy boating and food stalls, then Lulu Island is a good place to explore. The temperature during winter might go as low as 0 degrees Celsius so it might become unbearable for kids.
