Adelaide Zoo - Review

Adelaide Zoo was founded in 1883 and is the second oldest zoo in Australia. It is home to over 1800 animals from over 300 species. The zoo is set among 20 acres of natural green space. The highlight of the zoo is the Giant Panda Exhibit, which, opened in 2009, and houses two adorable Giant Pandas, Wang Wang and Funi. There are several other exhibits with animals from Australia and around the world including rare and endangered species. The Westpac Envirodome, an interactive visitor centre has all kinds of interesting and informative displays including a gravity defying vertical garden, several insects, reptiles and rare aquatic animals. The Children’s Zoo is a great place to interact with over a hundred animals. You can get really close and even pet animals like kangaroos, wallabies, cows, deer, rabbits and many more. A fun place to visit, the Adelaide Zoo is ideal for animal lovers and families with children.

  • Great zoo with. ice layout and clear instructions. A great variety of animals are kept here. Althouh the smaller size of the zoo makes animal watching more entertaining, it does make it feel a bit crammed for the animals. That said, they are looked after by very passionate and knowledgeable staff. Every visit here is an entertaining and educational experience for me

  • Adelaide Zoo is a great place to visit, especially with children. There are animals from all around the world here in many varied settings. Look out for the keeper talks and feeding times for a more in-depth experience with the zoo handlers where you are provided with extra information about the animals and you have the chance to ask questions too. There is a playground for the children to burn off some energy if they have any left after walking around the extensive grounds. Be aware, however, that there are only two individual unisex toilets at the playground so it's better to use different ones around the zoo before you get here - particularly if it's a busy day (I was with a group of children from vacation care and this was frustrating).

  • You should definitely go there when visitjng Adelaide. If I'm staying here, I would never hesitate to buy a membership card so that I can go in every now and then. For me it was amazing and I've seen animals that I've never seen in my life! I even saw animals I've been dreaming to see since I was a child (like the panda). You can go into huge cages to watch and interact with variety of wonderful birds and animals. Convenient natural and artificial spaces are made for animals to live on their own nature and not only in a cage.

  • It's not overly cheap. However, it must cost a fortune to run and maintain a zoo. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The animal attractions are fantastic and there is a great variety. Kids love the big playground ideally situated next to a great cafe. For when you need a rest. Not something you will go to once a week but definitely worth going to a few times a year.

  • Animal displays/ enclosures improving all the time. Great lush trees and foliage providing plenty of shade. Good information, maps and guides to provide assistance. Behind the scene tours and activities available. Meals and snacks available from several service points. Very family focused. Education and conservation focused as well. Open almost every day of the year.
