Jama Masjid - Review
Jama Masjid, which means the Friday mosque, is the most fantastic mosque of Ahmedabad. It lies in the old city part of Ahmedabad, opposite the Mahatma Ganti Road, on the eastern side of Maidan-i-shah or Teen Darwaza. It was part of a major plan designed by the Mughal Emperor Sultan Ahmed Shah. The western side of the mosque has the tombs of the emperor, his son and his grandson, Ahmed Shah Rauza. Nearby are the tombs of the queens known as the Rani Ka Hazira.
The mosque is built on a rectangular area. It has three entrances, one at the center of each side. The three sides are lined by gardens and the fourth side is used for worship and prayer purposes. In the center of the mosque, is a rectangular ablution. The prayer room is also rectangular with four domes. It is of an Indo-Saracenic architecture style. Some of the central parts of the mosque have lotus structures like the beautiful Jain temple styles. Some pillars even have reference of the bells of Hindu temples.
These are carved on the pillars that are shown hanging from chains. The open courtyard has classic marble flooring with fantastic paintings of Arabic calligraphy work. The whole monument is built of yellow sandstone and has exquisite carvings on all parts. There are 260 columns supporting the 15 domes in the main prayer hall. There is also some very pretty lattice craftwork done on the minarets remaining after the earthquake of 1819.

Jama Masjid, Ahmedabad Reviews
Built by Sultan Ahmed Shah in A.D. 1423. Considered to be the high water mark of mosque design on western India. Most of the architectural effect is concentrated in the sanctuary. The flagged courtyard is 255' X 220' Sanctuary Facade: The architect has combined the two types of sanctuary facades, the screen of arches and the pillared portico, with the screen in the centre and the portico on the wings. The juxtaposition of the two elements creates contrast between the volume and strength of the wall surface and the depth and airy lightness of the colonnade. The large central archway has large moulded buttresses of minarets on either sides, whose upper parts have now disappeared. Two smaller archways are placed on either side of the central one. Directly visible through the archway in the shadows is the colonnade of the interior with its engrailed arch springing lightly from its slender columns.
It wonderful location... It's too old place in Ahmedabad and good place... But it is in poor area... And also here good environment that give us very very freshness.... So good...
Such a great and beautiful structure.. pillars designs are awesome.. two storey building reminds me visit of qutub minar.. most of the part is looks like temple and at the west door I found some destroyed idols on pillars.. see in pic.. looks like this was an old temple structure later converted to mosque..
The Jama Masjid of Ahmedabad was probably the largest mosque in the Indian subcontinent built in this period. Designed as part of a major plan desired by the Emperor Sultan Ahmed Shah, the mosque is located south of the processional axis that runs from the Maidan-i Shah at the door with three arches, Teen Darwaza. To the west of the mosque are the tombs of Ahmed Shah I, his son and his grandson, Ahmed Shah's Tomb. Nearby are the graves of the queens and the other wives of the king, Rani no Hajiro.
