Jama Masjid, which means the Friday mosque, is the most fantastic mosque of Ahmedabad. It lies in the old city part of Ahmedabad, opposite the Mahatma Ganti Road, on the eastern side of Maidan-i-shah or Teen Darwaza. It was part of a major plan designed by the Mughal Emperor Sultan Ahmed Shah. The western side of the mosque has the tombs of the emperor, his son and his grandson, Ahmed Shah Rauza. Nearby are the tombs of the queens known as the Rani Ka Hazira.
The mosque is built on a rectangular area. It has three entrances, one at the center of each side. The three sides are lined by gardens and the fourth side is used for worship and prayer purposes. In the center of the mosque, is a rectangular ablution. The prayer room is also rectangular with four domes. It is of an Indo-Saracenic architecture style. Some of the central parts of the mosque have lotus structures like the beautiful Jain temple styles. Some pillars even have reference of the bells of Hindu temples.
These are carved on the pillars that are shown hanging from chains. The open courtyard has classic marble flooring with fantastic paintings of Arabic calligraphy work. The whole monument is built of yellow sandstone and has exquisite carvings on all parts. There are 260 columns supporting the 15 domes in the main prayer hall. There is also some very pretty lattice craftwork done on the minarets remaining after the earthquake of 1819.

Jama Masjid, Ahmedabad Reviews - Write a Review
Awesome Masjid... It's got such a history and very ancient and of great significance... Great construction... It's got 300+ pillars and the window construction is awesome... The only heart breaking factor is that, all the surrounding walls are used be people to construct their houses!!!
One of the beautiful mosque from the whole of India and definitely pride of Ahmedabad. The architect is marvelous. Best time to visit it is in the morning as its surrounded by narrow lanes and shops so you might have difficulty parking your car.
Very beautiful mosque. Best time is morning only before 9am. As street Gandhi Road is one-way and you can't park your vehicle later. Photography is allowed. Womens need to cover head if they enter inside main complex. Shoes is not allowed inside. Put it in rack only.
Great architecture. Historical value. Clean & well maintained.
It's jewel in the crown of Ahmedabad. One of the best architectural marvels to witness in Nadir Shah's city...The mosques in Ahmedabad are known for it's unique architectural character and the dual minarets unique to this region only.
