About Jama Masjid, Ahmedabad

Jama Masjid, which means the Friday mosque, is the most fantastic mosque of Ahmedabad. It lies in the old city part of Ahmedabad, opposite the Mahatma Ganti Road, on the eastern side of Maidan-i-shah or Teen Darwaza. It was part of a major plan designed by the Mughal Emperor Sultan Ahmed Shah. The western side of the mosque has the tombs of the emperor, his son and his grandson, Ahmed Shah Rauza. Nearby are the tombs of the queens known as the Rani Ka Hazira.

The mosque is built on a rectangular area. It has three entrances, one at the center of each side. The three sides are lined by gardens and the fourth side is used for worship and prayer purposes. In the center of the mosque, is a rectangular ablution. The prayer room is also rectangular with four domes. It is of an Indo-Saracenic architecture style. Some of the central parts of the mosque have lotus structures like the beautiful Jain temple styles. Some pillars even have reference of the bells of Hindu temples.

These are carved on the pillars that are shown hanging from chains. The open courtyard has classic marble flooring with fantastic paintings of Arabic calligraphy work. The whole monument is built of yellow sandstone and has exquisite carvings on all parts. There are 260 columns supporting the 15 domes in the main prayer hall. There is also some very pretty lattice craftwork done on the minarets remaining after the earthquake of 1819.

Jama Masjid, Ahmedabad Reviews

  • This place is not accessible by car! The historic mosque with its large and impressive court is really nice. There are always friendly people to show you around (though their English might be very limited). Unfortunately this place it is not very photogenic.

  • Right in the centre of the old city. Need to walk a bit to find the entrance. Amazing structure. Very well preserved. But encroachment of small businesses alongside the walls of the structure would damage the structure soon.

  • I visited as a Tourist. Even i am not Muslim but felt welcome in the Masjid. Historical place in modern era. Nice ambiance in such crowded area.

  • Very nice historical structure. Most revered mosque. Well kept. Most of the structure is still intact. Excellent carvings on the pillars and in the roof. More than 400 years old. Mogul style construction. Could see some portion of the area inside occupied by old materials, some shops and as dwelling, which affects the outlook. Enjoyed the whole trip. Not to be missed in Ahmedabad.

  • Its a peaceful place and a historical monument to visit mainly the place we wash our hands and all to do the namaz it is so cool and it is so stress relieving
