Senshu Park - Review
Once upon a time the Sakate Clan, one of the more powerful samurai families, had a castle at the site of this park. IT was called Kubota Castle. Practically nothing of the castle now remains, but there is a two story gate (through which you enter into the park) and a watchtower on the park's highest elevation - the Osumiyagura Turret . There is a small museum inside the tower, covering the history of the clan, but the real attraction there is the view from the highest point. As for the park itself, it was voted one of Japan's most beautiful. It's a local favourite throughout the year, and especially popular during the cherry blossom season, when cultural and music performances happen. By sheer virtue of being inside the park, the Iyataka Shrine is probably the most visited one in the city.

Senshu Park , Akita Reviews
It was relaxing at the top to sit under the shade... noticed several old locals were having some reading time there... didn’t realize there was so much to see at this park!
Parks I usually give it a miss but with not much planned we headed up the hill to have a wander. Crossing the road from our dormy Inn hotel we then crossed the bridge where we met an old lady selling ice cream but not any old ice cream. She ingeniously shapes it into a rose with a mix of vanilla and rose flavoured ice. For the 200 yen and a really nice smile it made our day. Going up the hill you come to a small cafe that sell really nice matcha . Going further up to come to a small pond and shrine with colourful shrubbery. Going even further up there is a small waterfall and a keep with a good view over Akita. With nice weather it was a nice leisurely stroll that gives you a real sense of tranquility.
There are two museums taking us through a tour of the history of Akita. The entrance fee is a mere 100 yen. There are beautiful parks which are spacious with numerous trees. There is a pond with beautiful creepers. Autumn colours are a silver lining. There is also a children’s park. Restrooms are available. There is a small store for drinks and snacks. One of the museums has an observation tower. Though only 2 storeys tall, the view of the city is beautiful. The park is walkable from the Akita station, 10-15 minutes. The art museum is opposite to the entrance of this park.
Fantastic Park. Highly recommended in the fall. Amazing views of the city and a good hike.
A nice quiet park in Akita. Great to send some time in peace.
