Having served the Unite States Navy, the USS Slater (DE-766) is essentially a Cannon-class destroyer escort. After serving the US Navy, it went on to serve the Hellenic (Greek) Navy. The ship derives its name from the great sailor Frank O. Slater of Alabama who lost his life in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. Today this ship has become a prime attraction for those visiting Albany, thus being considered as a ship museum. It has even been featured in popular Hollywood movies.
