One of the oldest standing buildings in Alice Springs, Adelaide House is the first hospital of the city designed and conceptualized by Revered John Flynn. One of the first things you’ll notice is how well the building is built- not architectural wise but more like keeping the climate in mind. Wide balconies to give way to ventilation, raised roofs for the heat to escape and cool winds to find their way to the rooms through the cellar stone passageways all goes to show the architect made the building ready to brace the climate and make the most of it.
After serving as a hospital and then a hostel for medical personnel during the war, Adelaide House is now a museum for the memorabilia of Reverend John Flynn who is tremendously respected because of his contributions towards the progress of Alice Springs and by extension, the country. Showcasing local history here, the most fascinating room is the radio room where Flynn and Traeger tested radio transmissions before the Flying Doctor Service was launched into operation.
