Events and Festivals in Alice Springs
- Alice Springs Beanie Festival (June/July): The beanie is a hand knitted/crocheted woolen hat that is made by the women of Central Australia. What started off as a community event is now thronged by many- Aborigines and others. Aimed at promoting the skills of the Aboriginal women, the Beanie Festival has expanded to a point where artists come down especially to showcase their culture and exhibits.
- Old Timers Fete (August): A popular event held within the retirement village of the Old Timers, it’s the biggest Fete in Alice Springs that is both supported and visited by the community to help raise funds for the Old Timers. Entertainment lasts all day and includes live performances, stalls of food, cakes and other homemade preservatives, auctions of second hand items and bric-a-bracs for you to take home as a souvenir.
- Henley-on-Todd Regatta (September): Easily classified as one of the “fun” events of Alice Springs, there’s never a moment of boredom during the Henley-on-Todd Regatta. The actual race is a rather funny affair. Taking place on the dried up bed of the River Todd, a 4 team crew builds a bottomless boat and go all Flintstones on it- they use their legs and race across the dry bed to cross the finish line first. Apart from this hilarious race, there’s a parade and a variety of other activities for you to take part in.
