The Old Ghan is undoubtedly one of the well known railways of the world. During its operational days, the railway used to run between Adelaide and Alice Springs along the Adelaide-Darwin Railway line, a journey which would take a total of 54 hours. Ghan, short for Afghan, the train was named in honor of the Afghan camel drivers that helped venture into Australia’s unchartered interior territory.

Even though the Old Ghan has long gone been out of action and has most of its original rail track taken out, 10 km of it still remains and as a part of the museum  experience where the Old Ghan still gives rides on Sunday mornings from MacDonell Siding where there’s a 1930’s quaint railway station. There are tearooms open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon teas. You could even book the Old Ghan Train for a dinner party and enjoy a nocturnal Central Australian adventure.
