The Royal Flying Doctor Service, previously known as Aerial Medical Service is 24 hour medical service where almost 80% of Australia can be reached by air, within two hours. The doctors and staff are constantly on call to respond to any medical emergency conveyed to them. Their main job at hand is to provide primary and preventive care till the patient is taken to a more stationary facility.

The Alice Springs base is a rather popular tourist attraction, but can be toured by the conducted tours that run every 30 minutes. The tour will allow you a look at the theatre for a visual treat, the operational air base, a full scale replica of the current aircraft in use, a flight simulator, medical gear used in the past and the control room.

  • So informative and the holographic presentation about the history of the service is very impressive. Staff are very welcoming and passionate about what they represent. Very enjoyable visit - totally recommended!

  • I liked this, but maybe I'm easily pleased. They do a great service and should be supported. The video of the founder was a bit cringe-worthy, but I'm self-deprecating English, so what the heck. Quite honestly, the shop takes up too much space, a bit OTT, and Mr RFDS; wasn't there a (kids) TV series about you in the late 1950s on UK BBC TV? A few B&W clips would add extra historic interest.

  • Stopped in on a Sunday to explore. They opened for the afternoon only and $17AUD to participate in a self-guided tour and view the exhibits. Proceeds benefit RFDS.

  • Visited Saturday morning for breakfast. About 4 customers in the cafe. Waited at the counter to order. Staff continued to go by without acknowledging my presence. After 5 minutes of being ignored we left. I have breakfast twice a month in Alice Springs but unfortunately not here

  • Nice place, but I miss the dynamic world of RFDS there, a bit too commercial?
