The Royal Flying Doctor Service - Review

The Royal Flying Doctor Service, previously known as Aerial Medical Service is 24 hour medical service where almost 80% of Australia can be reached by air, within two hours. The doctors and staff are constantly on call to respond to any medical emergency conveyed to them. Their main job at hand is to provide primary and preventive care till the patient is taken to a more stationary facility.

The Alice Springs base is a rather popular tourist attraction, but can be toured by the conducted tours that run every 30 minutes. The tour will allow you a look at the theatre for a visual treat, the operational air base, a full scale replica of the current aircraft in use, a flight simulator, medical gear used in the past and the control room.

  • Marvellous display of pioneering history and equipment. Educational video presentation on Flying doctors and the immense area covered. Gift shop has large variety souvenirs on display.

  • Great food and service. A step back to my childhood the house was just remided me of our old house on Lindsay Ave very sweet 💕💕💕💕

  • It's a great place, but there is no signs around to tell when the cafe closes! I was going to get something but the lady in there rudely yelled out "WE'RE CLOSED!" Get you act together...

  • An interesting presentation of the history of one of Australia's iconic and vital services. Highly recommended if you are visiting Alice Springs.

  • Pretty interesting and informative; the tour is actually a movie about the history and today's importance of the RFDS. The museum is the perfect combination of historical important artefacts and modern technology to get a better understanding of the enormous changes the RFDS went through during they were founded. We really enjoyed our visit !
