  • I didn't know this area was a "park"!? Where's the public access?

  • The city of Ames declares park status for Zumwalt Station (trailhead) Park, but has sadly failed to maintain this little railroad station on the southwestern edge of town. There is a cement slab - presumably the structural foundation of the former rail station - and a free standing grill. However, due to negligence, the park has become overgrown, and the park entrance has been chained shut. Furthermore, a portion of the trail west of State Street has been scoured through, the eastern trail head adjoining State Street is now private property, and the historic trestle that formerly crossed Worle Creek north of Oakwood Road collapsed in 1990 or '91, leaving the remainder of the trail - terminating on the southwestern edge of HWY30 as it passes the sixth tee-box of Gateway Park's frisbee golf course - inaccessible to the unadventurous.

  • Covered by trees and brush.
