Though there are multiple depots, the Wasilla one is truly historic one. Like, it’s listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and everything. The others aren’t bad. The best way to enjoy the depot is to take a train. Seriously, find a destination that sounds like good excuse and hop on. This really is one of those cases where the journey is far more awesome than the destination. You get fantastic views out of the window, the food is usually excellent, and there a charm to the stations here that you don’t find in most other places in USA. If you need a starting point, the Dome Express from Anchorage to Seward is highly recommended. Fairbanks is another popular trip. Try and get a car with a glass ceiling if you can.
There are three main summer trains – the Denali (Fairbanks-Denali-Anchorage), the Coastal (Anchorage-Girdwood-Seward), and the Glacier (Grandview). The other trains are The Hurricane (from Talkeetna to Hurricane Gulch) and Aurora (Fairbanks again).
The Alaska railroad vacations company offers multi-day packages.
