The first church here was built in 1915, a simple wooden structure built for $1400. It was Anchorage’s first Catholic Church. Rebuilt in Romanesque Revival style in 1946, it suffered damage in the 1962 earthquake. When repaired, it was completed in art Deco. Today the unusual looking building has a blocky white exterior with round golden windows. The interior is quite simple. This church was the host for the 1981 visit of Pope John Paul II to Anchorage, which attracted a crowd estimated at about 80,000 people. The Holy Father held a papal audience in the Cathedral itself and also for the handicapped audience.

Holy Family Cathedral Reviews & Ratings
Reverent and inspiring rosary followed by mass weekdays (rosary @11:40am, mass @12:10pm). In the heart of downtown Anchorage. What a beautiful way to thank God for all His blessings.
Established Cathedral with much history, a true Anchorage landmark. Welcoming atmosphere, with flexible Mass times. Beautiful design, with equally so recently installed stained glass windows. Only critique would be for the sermons to be more natural, and not read (recited). Super staff of volunteers, however- who do wonderful work on so many much needed levels.
Excellent church, I felt very welcomed on my first day, and even though they weren't doing Confessions before Sunday Mass, they asked the father so that I could get confessed. The mass in Spanish was awesome, I will definitely be coming here every Sunday
The mass is solemn. The sermon gave by the priest is very inspiring and there's audience interaction.
It's a beautiful church and the young paster is great. The people in the parish however I find standoffish and cold. I have been to several different masses on different days and different times. Even though it is located closer to my home in govt hill , I will continue to go to St. Benedict's in South Anchorage, where the people make us feel welcome and more like family.
