With an aim to protect Wisconsin's natural communities, the Apostle Islands Sandscapes State Natural Area was designated in 1992. A variety of unique sand-based landforms, like the dunes, beaches, sand spits, cuspate forelands, and tombolos come under this protected area. Supporting many plant, animals and bird species, this site is also considered a state-significant migratory bird concentration site.

Five islands stand out against the rest of the archipelago in this natural area protected since 1992, highlights its sand dunes and beaches unique shapes. The southernmost point of the island has a 1 ½ mile outside long stretch of sand and beach and dunes associated casualties. Migratory birds use this place to make your stop before continuing with their bi-annual migrations in spring and autumn.
