Museoa Arqueologico San Miguel de Azapa is a museum in chile that exhibits various antiquities of the Chinchorro culture. It was established in the year 1967 and is laid out in an area of 1,400 square meters. The property of the museum also includes the Park of Petroglyphs. Here, you will come across the bust of Max Uhle, a notable anthropologist in northern Chile. The park has 13 different carved stones that depict various scenes through pre-Hispanic art form. The museum houses a large variety of artifacts such as fabrics, basketry, and ceramics belonging to the Chinchorro culture. It has a collection of around 86,000 pieces, although only around 1000 are put up on display. The administration is planning on expanding the museum to be able to exhibit all the antiquities. Amongst all the museum pieces that are on display, the ones that stand out are the 15 mummies of the Chinchorro culture which are the oldest mummies in the world. These include fetuses, newborns, children, and adults up-to 35 years of age that are displayed in special vaults maintained under controlled atmospheric conditions.
