California Area Living Museum is home to more than 250 animals (about 80 species)- all of whom are either accustomed to people caring for them or simply who have physical disabilities and cannot survive in the wild anymore. The place also cares for endangered flora and fauna species while giving emphasis to the native species. Seeing the rare bighorn sheep here is an experience in itself. These sheep are reared with the assistance of the Los Angeles and San Diego Zoos. The spacious 14 acres of the zoo, make it a lovely place to take a leisurely walk.

The “Cats of California” exhibit is a favourite among visitors that includes mountain lions and bobcats. The zoo is also home to owls, snakes, bears, various species of foxes, deer and a number of domestic animals.

Other highlights include:

  • Black bear exhibit
  • The waterfowl pond where you can see migratory birds.
  • The underground reptile house
  • “Trees of California” exhibit that showcases native plants
  • Christmas season special “Holiday Lights at CALM” when the entire zoo is decorated with lights.
  • Railroad for children that contains replicas of Dinosaurs.

The best part about the zoo is that there is something for every animal lover here. The children love to pet the animals in the domestic animal section while the programs arranged here, give you a brief about the fossils, plants and all living things in California.

  • This is a great place to take young kids. There is plenty of space for them to run around and get some energy out. The animals are interesting and fun to learn about. We went at dusk in August and there was enough shade that it wasn't even hot. It was a great evening.

  • The place is the perfect place for kids. Kids get ample place to run and they really enjoy it. I went there with my family and the day was completely full of fun.

  • I had an amazing time here with my family. All the animals were out. The mountain lions got really close to us through the glass. The condors started flying when we approached. That was cool! And the indoor Coast room had some incredible type of creatures. Definitely make the time to visit!

  • It was a very nice place. We went late but got to see all the animals anyway. It was really cool. I'll have to make another trip down here to bring my family with

  • This is a must visit in Ken County!!! The place is in the middle of nowhere, the species are amazing, the love they have for the animals and rescues is admirable! We visited the place because they rescued a couple blue jay nestlings we brought to them that our cat got from their nest and almost died, they answered our messages right away and took the little guys and got them back to life! We decided to stop by and see the place and we really enjoyed it. We love nature and animals and was so refreshing to see the good work this place does for the animals and how they continue to rehabilitate and home so many with just donations... please visit this place and enjoy a day with them, this place rocks!
