Lake Powhatan Recreation Area And Campground Reviews & Ratings
We did some hiking and saw the back of this campground which looked very nice. The only problem is that we were looking for a walk-in tent site on Friday morning. Reservations could not be made for these sites so we hung out for two hours to see if anyone was checking out at 12pm. The ladies at the gate never smiled And were not friendly at all. In fact, they treated like we were a nuisance. At 11:30 a.m., we asked if we could sit at the picnic tables by the gate and make a sandwich so we could be first in line for a possible walk up site at 12:00 if someone checked out. We were told “no.” We drove back down the road about a half mile, made a sandwich, and returned to the gate again at 12:00 promptly. We asked if there were any vacancies, and the lady at the gate said “no.” I asked if we should hang out a few minutes longer to make sure there were no people leaving that might be a couple minutes late. She glared at me rudely and said, “I said there are no vacancies.” We truly felt like criminals or a nuisance. This is not how I would run my business. Another camp ground that we called told us no vacancies at this time but I hope you will call us again. Lake Powhatan gate keepers could use some sharpening on their customer service skills. Don’t plan to ever try to stay there ever again. We don’t feel very welcome!
We camped here multiple times last spring and it's awesome! Good luck getting a site though, they book up early through the summer and fall. They do have a few first come sites by the day.
Had a great time here! Very clean facilities and very friendly staff. Excellent campground for children. We stayed on the Hard Times loop and even though it was full most nights it was still peaceful and quiet. Camp hosts are visible and attentive.
Nice campground, lots of shade and very clean. We arrived late in the evening for a 1-night stay. When we asked if we could take our kids to the lake in the morning they said the gates only open at 10 AM. They sold us firewood that did not burn well. The next day (at 11:30), we asked the campground host if we could check out of the campsite but stay 30 minutes extra near the lake. The host was very rude and said 'no', we had to check out by 12:00 or pay $4 day-use fee each for all members of our party. When we said only the kids wanted to play in the lake and not the grandparents (who can't even walk down to the lake), they did not allow us to just take the kids to the lake and let the grandparents stay near the park entrance. So we paid day-use fees for all 6 members of our family for our two kids to play in the lake (pond) and checked out around 12:30. Very rude and inconsiderate. We have stayed at many campsites, and as long as we leave our campsite on time, we have been allowed to hang around and enjoy the place. After the kids played in the lake, we could not find any shower to wash off the sand. We tried to go and use the campground showers, but there were no separate parking near the showers and there was a guy in a golf cart staring at us. We already had had enough of the campground hosts frequently checking and staring at us, so we left in a hurry. We won't come back.
This was my family of 16 first experience going camping! I can say, we absolutely LOVED IT!! The Glamping Tents were so clean, the bed was comfortable and the entire set up was just Amazing, the Staff was so helpful and friendly!!! Each staff member went far and beyond to help us, with extra towels, sheets, and blankets etc.. The scenery and hiking made everything just right. We will definitely make this an ongoing family camping trip each year!!
