This is one of the more difficult trails around Aspen. The three-mile route is full of challenges that only experienced trekkers should undertake. Much of the trial is taken up by periodic ascents to reach the American Lake at an altitude of around 3500 metres. The trail is covered with aspen and spruce groves. Often it weaves through meadows of wild flowers that are rioting with colours in the warm summer months. There are waterfalls and ridges that add to the beauty of this setting. The lake is a perfect spot to spend some time fishing and relaxing. You can set up an overnight camp here if you prefer. The best time to hike on this trail is towards the end of summer, when it has rained slightly and the whole forest is alive with smells and beautiful colours.
