The art scene in Aspen is quite active and the creative hotspot in town is the Aspen Art Museum. It deals almost exclusively in contemporary art through exhibitions, workshops, events, talks, lectures, and short-term courses held in the museum. Through these activities, the museum aims to lend its presence to the contemporary art scene of the world. There are workshops organised for kids to learn and develop art with their parents. A lot of the paintings on display have been curated from the local artists, both budding and established. The displays here usually last for around a month and are constantly kept in rotation with other works. There are detailed interpretations by dedicated curators available in the museum.

  • What the others say is true. This is not a well curated art museum. Watch the video of the director "interviewing" the artist who made the rooftop hearth. I thought THAT was a piece of art... turns out it's earnest. But besides all that. I left a thermos in their lockers and it was stolen.

  • I didn’t hate it. It did rob me of some precious minutes of my life, including the few I spend writing this, but hopefully this and other reviews that will undoubtedly be in the same vein will cause the artistic director to change her perspective some. The building itself is a work of art and beautiful. The sparse collection that inhabits the building only makes the building seem that much more aesthetically pleasing. The pieces we saw ranged from large mixed media works to small oils, all contemporary abstracts. Aside from a couple of works that exhibited incredible technique, the rest seemed unworthy to hang in a gallery. Go visit the commercial art galleries for incredible contemporary art. The best way to enjoy those is to tell the art dealer up front - “I am not interested in buying. I’m just looking.”

  • Ban's building is amazing and we always love a good gift shop. Make sure you go up to the third floor space. Collection is hit or miss.

  • I spent hours talking to the friendly and knowledgeable staff about to gorgeous art they had on display. Don’t forget to go to the top floor and color a postcard they will send out for you.

  • Hmm not great content for me to relate too. Too “New York” for my taste....everything abstract expressionisty.
