The 1.8-mile dirt and rock section from Maroon Lake to the Crater Lake is the known as the Crater Lake Trail. This trail passes through aspen groves and rock formations to reach the Crater Lake. This moderately difficult trek is a very popular spot for hikers visiting Aspen. The trail originates near the Maroon Lake parking area. Once you cross the groves and the scree fields, you will come across the rock garden. From here begins the descent to the Crater Lake. Some gaps in the vegetation along this trail will allow you to glimpse the West Maroon Creek and the valley floor. You can camp overnight at the lake in summer.

Crater Lake Trail Reviews & Ratings
Light to moderate hike in, with great views and colors in the fall! A bit crowded, which brings it down in my book, but it's the maroon bells in the fall, so what else do you expect? Sturdy shoes are a big plus, as the last 1/3 or so of the hike is quite rocky. Great hike if you only have a few hours in the area. About 4 miles round trip, so plan on around 2 hours of hiking if you hold a moderate pace.
So beautiful here. I went during the sunset and it was absolutely incredible. Its about a mile and a half hike from the parking lot, but its great to get away from the tourists on a busy weekend.
While certainly challenging to reach for anyone unaccustomed to the altitude (yours truly), Crater Lake was absolutely spectacular to see in person. The snow-capped mountains added a level of magnitude and beauty hard to find anywhere else! Would totally recommend for anyone willing to take a challenging hike.
Worth the gnarly hike that it was! I am by no means an experienced hiker and the 1.4 miles it was from Maroon Bells seemed do-able. My legs may have been a bit soar for a couple days but it is absolutely gorgeous. Great place to stop if you packed a lunch. The hardest part was when it got rocky just before you get there.
Amazing place, hike to crater lake and camp if you have time. If you want an actual hike, take the loop for a solid 28 mile hike taking a total of about 4 days. I strongly recommend, just take care of it.
