This Monastery is from the Byzantine era of Greece. The lovely tall grey building is certainly worth a visit. The Monastery has beautiful tall windows that were typical of the era. The altar and all the tiny architectural details have interesting stories attached to them so do visit this one with a guide so as to understand these aspects.

The Daphni Monastery was built on the grounds of Apollo’s sanctuary which had been previously destroyed. There is interesting art-work inside and the byzantine exteriors are also rather impressive. The windows especially are very beautifully constructed. Inside the monastery, you shall come across stupendous mosaics that date back to the end of the 11th century. They offer as an example of the Classical idealism of Middle Byzantine art. This is an ideal destination for those who wish to enter into some kind of a spiritual retreat.

  • The Monastery is undergoing restoration but currently is open only for a free guided tour only on Tuesday and Friday from 10:00am to 2:00pm.
