The Odeon or theatre of Herodes Atticus is a lovely sight in the Acropolis. Standing in a gorgeous semicircle in the southern side of the Acropolis, the beautiful structure was made by Herodes for his wife.

The stands, most of which have been restored in an amazing way, stand facing a stage which has a beautiful wall full of windows as its backdrop. It looks so grand even today; one can only imagine just how lovely it must have looked when performances were held in the glorious open theatre. The place is certainly one of the must-see sites in the Acropolis.

Interestingly, the theatre can still be used and after the massive restoration, it has been used for several different events.

Please note that the Odeion is open only for performances and the best ways to have a glimpse of this site is to view it from the Acropolis. If you are visiting Athens in summers, you can watch a performance staged here during the Athens Festival each year. Also, visit the popular attractions in the city by following Athens itinerary 7 days.

  • You have to consider yourself very lucky if you succeed in attending a musical concert or any live performance in this around 2000 year old theater. The sound is really unique especially when you get a seat around the middle rows. Sometimes films are shown with an accompanying piano player. All that combined with a splendid view on the Acropolis which makes it all perfect !

  • If I have a chance to go there for a live concert, I know it is the greatest experience to have. After all, it is still magnificent site to go. Worth going up since the entrance ticket is together with the Parthenon.

  • The majesty of the ancient greek architecture on its peak! Watching a concert there on a beautiful summer night with the moon above you is the greatest experience you could have. So romantic, so majestic. The location of the seat you choose does not really matter because the acoustics of the theatre are so good that the sound is dissipated perfectly and reaches every seat in the same way. Beware though that the seats are made from marble (the theatre has pillows on every seat) so your behind will hurt a bit.

  • Excellent place to visit. The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a stone theatre structure located on the southwest slope of the Acropolis of Athens in Greece. The audience stands and the stage were restored using pentelic marble. Many famous artists have performed here.

  • Great shows. Great preserved Ancient theater. Got pillows to seat. No space for back support if seated on the upper seats, same for some seats in the lower area. The entrance view is unforgettable it's like you live in past. On mid summer blows a nice gentle wind. It's worth it to visit, ticket prices are reasonable.
