Odeon Of Herodes Atticus - Review

The Odeon or theatre of Herodes Atticus is a lovely sight in the Acropolis. Standing in a gorgeous semicircle in the southern side of the Acropolis, the beautiful structure was made by Herodes for his wife.

The stands, most of which have been restored in an amazing way, stand facing a stage which has a beautiful wall full of windows as its backdrop. It looks so grand even today; one can only imagine just how lovely it must have looked when performances were held in the glorious open theatre. The place is certainly one of the must-see sites in the Acropolis.

Interestingly, the theatre can still be used and after the massive restoration, it has been used for several different events.

Please note that the Odeion is open only for performances and the best ways to have a glimpse of this site is to view it from the Acropolis. If you are visiting Athens in summers, you can watch a performance staged here during the Athens Festival each year. Also, visit the popular attractions in the city by following Athens itinerary 7 days.

Odeon Of Herodes Atticus, Athens Reviews

  • You have to consider yourself very lucky if you succeed in attending a musical concert or any live performance in this around 2000 year old theater. The sound is really unique especially when you get a seat around the middle rows. Sometimes films are shown with an accompanying piano player. All that combined with a splendid view on the Acropolis which makes it all perfect !

  • Great shows. Great preserved Ancient theater. Got pillows to seat. No space for back support if seated on the upper seats, same for some seats in the lower area. The entrance view is unforgettable it's like you live in past. On mid summer blows a nice gentle wind. It's worth it to visit, ticket prices are reasonable.

  • While I visited I was lucky enough to have been able to enjoy a night of their art festival. They had a silent film double feature after sunset with a pianist accompanying the film. It was an unparalleled experience. The weather was perfect! It was, however, very uncomfortable to sit there. They provide some padding for you to sit on, but there is no back support. My bottom and back were not too happy so I was only able to enjoy the first film.

  • Got an opportunity to attend a live music performance on the day we visited this area. It was a great experience watching and listening to around 50 musicians and 3 to 4 singers. The sound is amazing in this theater and on top of that you get to see Acropolis in the night lighting.

  • We ended up attending a concert at this beautiful ancient amphitheatre and loved it. The acoustics were great and experience of sitting in a 2000 year old theater watching live performance was amazing.
