About The Stanley Hotel, Athens

The Stanley Hotel is a 420-room Colonial Revival hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. Approximately five miles from the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, the Stanley offers panoramic views of Lake Estes, the Rockies and especially Long's Peak. It was built by Freelan Oscar Stanley of Stanley Steamer fame and opened on July 4, 1909, catering to the American upper class at the turn of the century. The hotel and its surrounding structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Stanley Hotel also hosted the horror novelist Stephen King, serving as inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in his 1977 bestseller The Shining and location for the 1997 miniseries. Today, it includes a restaurant, spa, and bed-and-breakfast and provides guided tours which feature the history and alleged paranormal activity of the site.

  • All around great place. Renovated rooms are spacious and modern. Worth paying the extra fee for buffet breakfast in the Livingston restaurant. Roof has pool, bar and excellent restaurant with views of the Acropolis and the entire city, with very good service. Metro subway station 100 feet from main entrance. Will definitely stay here again.

  • Trust the warning of those who have reviewed the place at stay elsewhere. Many have suggested Novus Hotel which is just opposite The Stanley. I made the mistake of not trusting the reviews, thinking that people may just have been unlucky. NO. SO WRONG. The Stanley is absolute trash. Worst stay of my holiday. I've stayed at hostels and guesthouses with way better service and amenities then this. If you really need to stay here, be sure to get a room in their new wing. That is the only consolation to this horrendous place. Do not expect any service from the staff here.

  • For a 4-star hotel, it was good. Its location is central with an underground station a few steps away from the hotel entrance. Staff are friendly and very helpful. Breakfast had a decent variety.

  • Very pleasant, polite attentive staff, excellent views, smart well equipped rooms. Great rooftop bar, restaurant and pool. Prices surprisingly reasonable.

  • Tiny rooms but good location and roof top with an amazing view on Acropolis and the city. Roof top restaurant with average food quality and service.
