Every place needs a nice natural retreat away from the hubbub of the city; Atlanta is lucky to have Stone Mountain. This  quartz monzonite dome monadnock was once the site of white supremacist activities and was actually owned by Ku Klux Klan affiliates.

In 1958, the government purchased the Park and the Klan was evicted. The magnificent bas-relief on the north face or the largest on the planet and depictStonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis – all Confederate Heavyweights.

Today, there are a great number of activities in and around the park. The min highlights are the Summit Sky ride (a cable car with incredible views to the top of the mountain), the Scenic Railroad, the Sky Hike (a thrilling but safe walk that challenges your balance and vertigo), the Geyser towers, the Great Barn, the amphibious Duck rides, adventure golf, fishing at Stone Mountain Lake etc.

There’s even a terrific Laser and Light and a dog show. If you want to get away from all these organized attractions as well, try for some of the many hiking trails.

Stone Mountain Park Reviews & Ratings

  • Great place. Very festive. Amazing crowd handling ability and very well trained and warm volunteers. Laser show and the top of the mountain were my takeaway highlights from my visit here. I happened to be here on one of the most crowded days, during the month of October. So I enjoyed the pumpkin festival theme. Based on the crowd it wouldn't be a bad idea to pay for the VIP passes online, if ones planning to visit this place during popular times of the season. Very scenic place. Definitely a more-than-one-time-visit place.

  • Visit! I love it here! I'm slowly making my way through all the trails, but I'm in awe of the many events they have here. Took my hubby and two dogs here for a run and didn't want to leave. I also love that there is restricted access (parking passes needed) and a decent and polite law enforcement presence. Very family friendly. My dogs can go on most trails and I've never seen a shortage of parking.

  • Good for kids. I'm told that the camping is very nice. Do you know how some parks have crews always cleaning, painting & doing general maintenance? This place could use some of that. Opens at 10am (approximately) and closes at 5pm (at least in September when we were there) so there should be plenty of opportunity to power wash away some of the grime. The laser show and fireworks were good. View from the top was very good.

  • Lots of history here very interesting place to visit. So serene and plenty of activities we can do with the family. Still haven't gone on the train ride but will do on my next visit. Bought a season pass and love it.

  • Expensive, but just barely worthwhile. The mountain climb up/down is very slippery - even when dry - so be sure to wear appropriate shoes. The geological museum at the foot of the mountain is very well assembled and is most informative. The attractions are fun and the Halloween decorations were impressive. Staff were all very friendly and competent. All of this to say, however, that it rankles with me to give that much money to a structure so intertwined with the unquestionably evil aspects of American history. History is important, but maintaining the largest bas relief in the country (world?) In a literal monument to the institution of slavery - and which was created for that express purpose, mind - is surreal in its backwardness. In short, the park is great except for the headliner.
