Paithan which was earlier known as Pratishthana or Pishtapuram, is a small town located a little away from the main city of Autungabad in Maharahtra. The city was the capital of the Satavahana Empire almost 2000 years ago. The Mungi village here is the birthplace of Nimbarka Sampradaya tradition of Vaishnavism. It also has the cenotaph of the great Maharashtrian saint, Eknath. This is where many people flock to during the Paithan festival every year. It is also known as ‘Nath Sashti’. The most important aspect of this town is its Paithani silk sarees. These are beautiful sarees with gold or silver borders. It is also a famous Digambara jainn Atishay Kshetra. It is believed that all your prayers come true if you pray to the black idol of the teerthankar Muni Suvratnath placed here. The other notable personalities from here are- Shankarrao Chavan, Yogiraj Maharaj Gosavi and Balasahib Patil.
