  • If you want to see how Austin looked like years ago, this is a must-see. It's like a beautiful, beaming rigidity raggedy shack in the middle of the modern, uninteresting buildings that surround it. We were there on a Saturday night and it was packed. We paid around $10-15(??) As cover charge for getting inside the dance hall. If you want to take the dance lessons, it's around $20-25 from what I can remember. We didn't get to try their food, only had a couple of beers. It was like being transported to the time when cowboys would get out of the bar and have their guns ready for action. But of course I watch a lot of cowboy movies so that kind of reminded me of those movies. It's very alive and every body is having so much fun—be of dancing or just hanging out at the restaurant. Oh and the owner, Jack, is there as well! Very friendly old man. I hope they continue to be open for a very, very long time!

  • Flagrant false advertising! Also dance lessons apparently terrible! My husband and I went to the Broken Spoke (locals call it the BS) in hopes of doing the 8pm dance lessons. The signs outside said cover for the dance hall started at 9, and the sign for the dance lessons said nothing about a cost. However, when we got inside, there was a hand written sign telling us dance lessons would be $7 with an additional $8 cover charge. We argued that the sign out the front claimed there was no cover till 9, and we would leave before 9, but she said no, that didn’t apply to the dance lessons- that the moment you walk through the door you pay a cover...Which I still don’t understand, as they’re held in the dance hall...which the sign outside said had no cover till 9... I hate when a place isn’t upfront about these sorts of fees, and then refuses to admit the confusion or contradiction of the situation. What’s even more suspect is that they don’t list these prices on line anywhere, and by reading through other reviews it sounds like they change the prices to whatever they feel like on the night, with little consistency. It all seems very unfair and unprofessional. Anyway! In the end I’m glad we walked away because upon reading other reviews it sounds like the dance lessons are terrible and the dance instructor is a bully, who is also rude and racist. So while I’m glad we dodged that bullet, I wanted to warn people about the misleading signage and false advertising. It really is BS...

  • Just go. Really, just go. It's a cultural phenomenon and worth your time. Great music, great dancing and even 2-step lessons from the most entertaining dance instructor I've ever seen.

  • Awesome place! The music was great (both the free music and the paid admission to the band). The serving staff was really nice, and there was a good mix of locals as well as tourists. I would highly recommend this place

  • This place is so much fun! It's like leaving Austin and arriving to Texas... (Stereotypical Texas that is...) Great music, old times style locals, service with a smile and loads of fun dancing in this wonderful wonderful place. Cover was 7$ and totally worth it, of course
