This acclaimed feat of engineering – a legendary canal lock – overshadows Bezier’s every other claim to fame. They are essentially 8 ovoid lock chambers and nine gate that were built for a single purpose – to raise boats 21.5 meters over a distance of 300 meters on the Canal du Midi. While today such an engineering feat might not sound like much, this was built in the 16th century. As such, this is a historical monument. It is also a UNESCO world heritage site. The old buildings such as the stables and the lock-keepers house are still preserved.
It is still in use today, and you can have some fun watching boat trying to navigate the locks. There is a café nearby, which makes for a good vantage point.
Trivia: There is a plaque to Thomas Jefferson on the right side near the top of the locks. He travelled this canal in 1787.
