Shwemawdaw Pagoda is a splendid 114 meter tall stupa in Myanmar. Popularly known as the Golden God Temple, this stupa makes for an impressive sight to behold. It was originally built in the 10th century, C.E. and stood 21 meter tall then. However, it got destroyed many times due to earthquakes and what stands before you now is the most recent structure. Apparently, the stupa was built by the Mon to hold two hair of Lord Buddha which also came to house tooth relics in later years. You can also see a bell from King Dhammazedi, a crown from King Bayinnaung, and a spire umbrella from King Bodawpaya upon visiting the temple. The temple is home to the Shwemawdaw Pagoda Annual Festival which is an elaborate 10-day affair. A must visit place in Bago, Myanmar, head towards it on a weekend.
