The Gleninchaquin valley is a result of glaciation that took place 70,000 years ago. It is a narrow valley with its backwall resulting in a spectacular waterfall. This cascade feeds many lakes like Loughs Inchaquin, Uragh and Cloonee. The park is famous to house some rare species of flora, which are otherwise found only in Spain and Portugal. Abundant bird and animal population makes the park one of the frequently visited one. Chough, Goldcrest, Jay, Pigeon, Pipits and Skylark can be seen regularly, along with the Kerry slug, the Red squirrel and the Stoat. The best season to visit the park is in the summers, when migratory birds like the Swift, Cuckoo and the House Martins flock the park. Also, during winter one can watch and observe the Redwings, Fieldfare and Plover lapwings.
