Popular for fighting off 32 Japanese Planes and shining during the World War II, the USS South Dakota’s role in war history is hard to ignore. However, the whole battleship could not be brought to the city and hence a few parts of the ship where brought here to the Sherman park.
The outline of the ship is constructed in concrete boundaries at the park giving you a peek into how it would feel to actually stand on the battleship.
- The original 16-inch gun placed here.
- The original flag mast on the ship.
- Other original parts including a bell, an anchor and a propeller.

U S S South Dakota Battleship Memorial Reviews & Ratings
Interesting little museum. We had a couple hours to kill so stopped at this Museum. It had several side stories that brought a personal side to it. The movie had a lot of information in it. The outside being an outline of the ship with guns, propeller and anchor was cool. So, my kids who have explored the Battleship Texas were a little disappointed that there wasn't a "real" battleship to see. However, the museum is well done and the lady who was working was very nice and informative. She gave great information and history lessons! I wouldn't drive out of the way to visit, but it is a great stop if you're already in the area.
Outline of the most decorated ship of world war 2. With gun placements an a decent museum with free entry. They take and you should give donations.
Alot of information that I did not know about the battleship and it's crew. Been wanting to see it for years, never took the time, ashamed of myself. Very impressive. Plan to go back again, by myself so I can take my time.
Really great. The outline of the ship was good to walk and read about the ship. You could spend hours inside reading all the displays and looking at the donated items. Very interesting.
It's always interesting to learn new things about the ship.
