The George Peabody library is the research library of the John Hopkins University. It was earlier on known as the library of the Peabody Institute. It was the dream of George Peabody to make this library and dedicate to all citizens who wanted to consult it. It was his return to the people of the city for their love and kindness.

George Peabody was a very wealthy merchant during the early 19th century and had earned a lot during his life time as a trader. As a capital amount he contributed $300000 that was extra ordinary during that time. It was his wish that the library be always filled with books on all fields of knowledge, especially literature. The library is thus filled with a variety of books on different subjects and many of this are of the 19th century.

The interior design and decor are also remarkable. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the whole world. The huge racks, the inner levels, balconies and the walls are all extremely well designed.

Peabody Library Reviews & Ratings

  • This is a historical landmark to visit when you are in Baltimore so I made it a priority. It is really beautiful in here and I love the architecture of the building inside and out. You cannot go anywhere except the first floor of the library but you can see plenty from the ground floor. They are located in Johns Hopkins University so sometimes it is closed so just beware. This is the library that was the inspiration for Belle’s library in Beauty and the Beast so if you loved that movie or just love library in general check it out next time you are in town!

  • The George Peabody Library is one of the most beautiful venues in the country and it is SO special to be able to host a wedding there. The whole process was seamless and everyone on their team was professional and offered a personal touch. We loved working with Laura and Sam and are so grateful for their quick responses, and help bringing our vision to life. We will cherish these memories forever!

  • My daughter wanted to visit this library. Parking is limited, we had to park several blocks away. After a long hot walk we arrived to find out you can only access the first floor. 😑 I found it quite boring but my daughter was in awe and enjoyed skimming the books. It’s a beautiful library for taking pictures though.

  • As a wedding photographer with a background in architecture and design, Urban Row Photography would love the opportunity to capture a wedding in this historic and incredibly unique space! The lighting, and unending stacks of books with metalwork details and the black and white floor are so picturesque... being located in the heart of Mt. Vernon is especially great for portraits too. Love how timeless a space like this is!

  • The George Peabody Library is the 19th century research library of the Johns Hopkins University. It's called Baltimore's "Cathedral of Books," and if you visit, you'll understand why. The library was built in 1878 and it has stunning cast-iron balconies and a massive skylight. Its closed Sundays and Mondays but has limited hours to explore the rest of the days of the week. It's so beautiful and well worth exploring if you're visiting Baltimore or live in Baltimore but have never been!
