This is the oldest as well as the largest University of the city. It covers a large area in the Eastern part of Baltimore and is divided into as many as 10 large divisions. These are further dedicated to various fields of studies and social activities.
The university was a dream project of John Hopkins who was a rich Entrepreneur. He was a childless bachelor and thus to make a good use of his earnings he started the project of a hospital and this university that was set up in the later part of the 19th century. Marking all major wars and events that have proved its might on the city, this academic patron stands erect on the same place where it was set up in 1876.
Apart from just being a very old educational institution, it has many other parts of goodwill beside its name. These include the fact that this was the first such organization that abolishes the difference between African and Americans and thus treated them all equally as human beings made of blood and flesh. The principles of Abraham Lincoln inspired Hopkins to take such positive steps towards building a healthy society. Hopkins is also known to have liberated and fought for women’s rights through building of this university and had also supported the freedom of speech that was a matter of revolution at that time. It is at present a well known academic institution and a prime tourist attraction for visitors.
