Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium - Review

One of the five planetariums in India, it was founded by Bengaluru City Corporation in 1989. Located on Sir.T Chowdaiah Road, it has been managed by the Bengaluru Association for Science Education (BASE) since 1992. The Planetarium features a 15 meters diameter dome with a seating capacity of 210. “Space Master” Planetarium projector projects the night sky as seen with naked eye on the dome along with constellation pictures and Panoramas. It is used for teaching astronomy as well. Apart from this, video projectors, slide projectors, special effect projectors, etc. are also used for the shows.

The sky-theatre shows are very popular and attract about 2 lakh visitors every year. These blend science with literature, art and cultural aspects of many countries using special animation, visual effects and videos. The planetarium also has exhibition halls and a science park. A special feature here is called 'Know Your Stars', which is a program conducted by ABAA on first Sunday of every month that includes lectures on constellations, Stars and Planets, using of telescopes manned by amateur astronomers.

  • This place is a great place to sit down and relax. There are a lot of scientific exhibits around in amalgamation with a kid's play area. Not to forget, It was unpleasant to see quite an amount of litter under each park bench. It's my humble request to people visiting in the future not to do so. Coming to the show, we attended the 'Stars' show who was scheduled at 4:30 PM in English language on a Saturday. Entry into the planetarium building is only allowed 10 minutes prior. There are personnel inside who check you tickets and ask you to form straight line to enter the theatre, they seem to instruct you like they're instructing a bunch of school children, it's probably because they have a lot of students visiting and they're used to advising them in that tone. The theatre is maintained very well, but there's not enough leg room for adults. The show was beautiful, especially the narration, although they can do much better by amping up the resolution.

  • Truly wonderful experience!! The show was amazing. We saw the stars shows and it was an remarkable experience. It was really realistic and mesmerising. But unfortunately, when we went it was raining so we could not observe the park outdoors. But there were quite some interesting things to do and some facts about the stars and planets. I would recommend this place for a fun and educational trip . Nice for kids and adults alike.

  • Good place to visit for the kids. The auditorium is so cool. You will get to know about your solar system and the universe through this show. You get a feeling as if you are lying on an open terrace at night, watching the sky 🌌 with lots of stars ✨. The language of the show depends on the timing of the show. I had been to last show at 4:30 pm. Cons: The screen is dome shaped and you need to watch the entire show with your heads up. You get neck pain after some time and also annoying if you get the front and corner seats.

  • A worthwhile place to visit to inculcate scientific temper. The show is spectacular. Any layman can learn about the science from the exhibits in science park. All exhibits have boards explaining them. There is ample parking space even for buses.

  • Amazing place for children and those who are interested in Science and Space. Science park is very informative and attracting. Science park require little more maintenance. The planetarium sky shows are unique and very informative. Must visit place in Bangalore for Science lovers.
