The majestic and imposing building of Vidhan Soudha houses the State Legislature. The largest Secretariat in India, its construction began in 1952 and was completed in 1956. Chief Minister of the then Mysore State, Kengal Hanumanthaiah, was responsible for the structure, the concept and the setting of this magnificent building. The construction was supervised and executed by engineers and architects led by late B.R.Manickam, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department. This arresting monument took five thousand labourers, 1500 chiselers, masons and wood carvers and four years to complete. Built entirely of Bengaluru granite stone in the Dravidian style, it features floral motifs on stone carvings that are drawn from the celebrated temple craft of South India.

The structure stands out as an example of architectural skill and splendor. Vidhan Soudha is crowned by a 66 feet tall and 60 feet wide central dome, with the celebrated emblem of India. It is accompanied by eight pillars and six smaller domes. This place boasts of eight floors, with four floors above the ground floor and an equal number underground with three hundred and sixty rooms and fifteen conference halls that are very well-maintained.
