Due to the vast immigration of Irish, the number of Catholics increased very rapidly from a couple hundred in the 1830’s to about 6,000 in 1853. Reverend. John Bapst, Saint John’s was announced to be the Pastor of St. Michael’s Church in 1853. The cornerstone for St. John’s Catholic Church was laid on the 15th of August in 1855. The church on York Street is constructed on the land where the first settler of Bangor; Jacob Buswell, used to live. It was made according to the design of New-York architect Patrick Charles Keeley. Placed under this particular stone is a bottle encasing a piece of blood-stained, feathered and tarred cassock which belonged to Reverend John Bapst. The outside of St. John’s Church was later cleaned and re-painted. A year later, the interior of the church was completely renovated and redecorated in the year1953. St. John’s Catholic Church went on to be placed on the National Register of Historic Buildings in 1973. The Hook organ was also restored in 1981. A major restoration project was started at St. John’s to maintain, repair and refurbish the church and refractory in 1988. All in all, it’s a wonderful spot to visit and you should not miss it!
