The Bangor Congregation of St. John’s Church was later divided and then a new parish was formed in 1872. Later, Reverend John W. Murphy was appointed as the Pastor of St. Mary’s parish which was originally built on Cedar Street. While St. Mary’s was still in the initial stages of construction at this time; Father Murphy engaged the auditorium of Bangor City Hall as a place of worship. A temporary altar and seating were set up for mass once the church basement was complete. The cornerstone of St. Mary’s was laid in September by Reverend D.W. Bacon, Bishop of Portland. In 1880, Father Michael C. O’Brien succeeded Father Murphy. Fr. O'Brien built the rectory, installed the organ and built a school during his 21 years of Pastorate. Stained glass windows were installed and a bell was installed in the tower between1908-1933.
