Banteay Srei Temple, near the hillocks of Phnom Dei, is a temple dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva and offers exquisite three-dimensional carvings that earned it the recognition as the jewel in the crown of Angkorian art. A special feature of the architecture is the usage of pink sandstone or quartz arenite and the sandalwood carvings. Banteay Srei means ‘Citadel of the Women’ and the significance lies in the carvings of the women figures wearing traditional skirts with lotus flowers in hands. The recreation of the scenes from the Ramayana adorning the library pediments is also mesmerizing. Three concentric rectangular enclosures complete the site with the outer Gopura, Outer Enclosure, Second Enclosure and the Inner Enclosure along with the library and the sanctuary.
