About La Boqueria, Barcelona

La Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, which is better known as La Bouqueria, is a very old Market in Barcelona. The first mention of it can be found as early as the 1400s. This market is extremely important to the culture of Barcelona.

Initially used only as a fish market, it now is a market place for a diverse selection of fresh produce. Today, a walk through this market will make you marvel at the number of fresh fruits, vegetables, grocery products, fresh fish and other sea-food and several other food products available under a single roof. There is also a huge variety of candied fruit to take back home on your vacation. Just the array of colours, textures and smells of the fruit are enough to attract just about everyone but you can get quite a good bargain too!

Gaze through the delectably fresh produce adorning the shelves at La Boqueria and gain the most of the market with the help of La Boqueria tickets that come with a local expert teaching you the basics of Spanish cuisine and guiding you to what to pick and what not to. Check the La Boqueria ticket prices from the tours listing and buy tickets for La Boqueria as getting tickets for La Boqueria is totally worth every penny.

  • If you're looking for a place to taste a bit of the local culture, you should stop by here. There are plenty of stalls that sell a variety of fantastic things to munch on. Deep fried peppers, paper thin slices of ham, and mini spanish sausages are amongst the many goodies that available to eat from a paper cone while you wander around the place. There's a significant fresh fish section in the middle of the market, and even a few bars and restaurants where you can sit and eat. Vegetarians are well served too, by a stall that has an all vegetarian menu in the far right corner of the market. This place is colorful, lively, and a treat for your taste buds.

  • Everything is fresh and good quality. It is a small market and I found the the stalls were repeated too much. There were 6 cheese stalls and 4 cut fruit stalls and they all sell the same type of things. I did enjoy the paella from a little stall tucked away at the back. It’s 6 euros for a take away container. Decent portion.

  • I have visited the market many times over the last 10 years, and I always enjoyed the variety of food and the delicious lunches. In 2017 I was disappointed because the number of tourists made it impossible to enjoy anything. If you already know the market don't go there again and keep your memories of an exciting place in the heart of Barcelona

  • Great experience to walk through, but the food we bought wasn't great. The empanada I bought was undercooked and the fruit salad had mold in the middle. And when we bought some bulk nuts I couldn't believe how expensive they were. So walk through and enjoy, but be VERY careful what you buy.

  • The best place in Barcelona! There is so many flavours and scents to tempt your senses. I loved the fresh juice on offer at almost every stand! A must see and experience destination!
